Even Toyota has China-only versions with Chinese-only firmware — here's what to do
Many people are surprised: Toyota is Japanese, what does China have to do with it? Reality 2024-2026: Toyota actively sells **unique models** on the Chinese market, jointly developed with Chinese partners (GAC Toyota and FAW Toyota). These models aren't sold outside China but are actively imported via grey channels.

Toyota RAV4 (6th generation, 2026)
A completely new RAV4 developed specifically for the Chinese market. **Not to be confused with the global 6th-gen RAV4** — they're different. The Chinese version has bigger screens, HUD, advanced Toyota ADAS, hybrid drivetrain. Multimedia entirely in Chinese without language change.
Toyota BZ5
Electric crossover made jointly with BYD. Uses BYD Blade Battery. Positioned as "Toyota quality + BYD tech". Multimedia is based on a modified BYD platform, but with Toyota UI. Localization is a hybrid approach for BYD and Toyota.

Why Toyota (Chinese) is one of the hardest
Toyota uses **proprietary diagnostic protocols** different from Android. Many standard approaches don't work. Requires specialized equipment orders of magnitude more expensive than standard.
Also: BZ5 uses BYD Blade Battery and BYD powertrain components, but is controlled through Toyota software. This is a hybrid requiring understanding of **both platforms**. Our engineers went through special training on Chinese Toyota.
What we do
Full multimedia, HUD and cluster translation. Google Maps + Waze installation (non-trivial due to Toyota platform). Google apps activation via special compatibility layer. English voice assistant. SIM slot install.
BZ5 specific: some functions are managed by BYD components, some by Toyota. We translate both layers separately for full localization.
Warranty and service
This is the hardest aspect. Formally Toyota warranty applies worldwide. In practice: **local Toyota dealers refuse warranty on grey Chinese versions**. International Toyota network only recognizes global versions.
Our approach: work carefully without touching Toyota proprietary protocols. Can do a full rollback in 45 minutes before a dealer visit. But relying on dealer warranty for Chinese Toyota isn't viable.
Timing and cost
Toyota RAV4 (6th generation): 4-5 hours, $500-600. Toyota BZ5: 5-6 hours, $600-700 (hybrid platform). 1-year warranty on our work. In-workshop only (remote not recommended).
