Chinese EV Brands Compared — Which One to Buy in 2026?

When a client asks "which Chinese EV should I buy?", we don't auto-answer "BYD" or "AITO". We ask back: "For what and what budget?". This article gives a straight comparison of major Chinese brands based on our experience.

Comparison by buyer type

"I need a reliable family car under $40k"

Pick: BYD Song Plus, Sealion 07, Leapmotor C16, Deepal S07. All proven models, stable, easy to service. BYD wins on dealer count, Leapmotor on price (Stellantis partnership), Deepal on premium options for the money.

"I need a premium crossover under $70k"

Pick: AITO M7, Denza N7, Deepal S09, Avatr 07. AITO leads on tech (HarmonyOS + Huawei ADS 2.0), Denza on premium options on the BYD platform, Deepal S09 is the new flagship, Avatr has the most aggressive design.

"I need a flagship SUV under $100k"

Pick: AITO M9, Denza N9, Avatr 11. All three are BMW X7 / Mercedes GLS competitors. AITO M9 is the most popular (250k+ annual sales in China), Denza N9 is more traditional, Avatr 11 is the most tech-heavy (3 LiDARs).

"I need an electric sedan under $50k"

Pick: BYD Seal, Denza Z9 GT, Avatr 12, Li Auto Mega. BYD Seal is most affordable, Denza Z9 GT is sporty wagon, Avatr 12 is premium BMW 5 Series equivalent.

"I need an off-road SUV"

Pick: BYD Leopard 3/5/7, Deepal G318, Fangchengbao. BYD Leopard 3 is compact off-roader, Leopard 7 is the flagship, Deepal G318 is the most extreme in segment (Defender-tier).

Comparison by localization difficulty

Easy to localize ($250-400, 2-4 hours): BYD, Leapmotor, Deepal S07/SL03, Dongfeng, Changan, Nissan N7, Roewe. Medium difficulty ($350-550, 3-5 hours): Deepal G318/S09, Denza N7, Li Auto, Lynk & Co. Hard ($500-800, 4-8 hours): AITO, Avatr, Denza N9, Toyota (Chinese versions). Cost difference isn't our whim — it's the objective complexity of working with HarmonyOS + proprietary Huawei components.

Comparison by reliability (our stats)

Across 5000+ jobs we've seen every possible problem. Most reliable by our experience: BYD (rare issues, quick fixes), Deepal (stable), Leapmotor (simple architecture — fewer failures). Need caution: early AITO M7 (before June 2023 — board issues), Avatr 11 (complex electronics). Need attention at purchase: Toyota (Chinese versions) — rare models, need a verified broker.

Comparison by warranty

Formally all Chinese brands offer factory warranty of 5-8 years on battery, 3-4 years on everything else. In practice: warranty applies in China. Outside China — only through specialized importer-dealers who rarely take warranty commitments. Our advice: buy through a verified broker who takes on warranty commitments for the first year after delivery.

Bottom line — recommendation table

BYD — universal family pick, max support. AITO — if you want top tech and are ready for complex service. Deepal — premium for mid money, ideal balance. Leapmotor — if budget is tight and there are European Stellantis partners. Denza — premium status on the reliable BYD platform. Avatr — for enthusiasts, max tech.
