CarPlay & Android Auto on Chinese BYD — Deep Dive Guide (2026)

Wireless CarPlay works on almost every Chinese BYD — here's the full technical breakdown

CarPlay & Android Auto on Chinese BYD — Deep Dive Guide (2026)

One of the most common questions when buying a BYD from China: 'Will CarPlay actually work?' Short answer — yes, it will. But there are nuances you need to know in advance. This article covers everything about Apple CarPlay and Google Android Auto on China-market BYD: which models are compatible, wireless or wired, phone requirements, and typical issues.

Does CarPlay work out of the box on Chinese BYD?

Short answer: **no**. Chinese factory BYD firmware **blocks CarPlay and Android Auto** — China promotes its own ecosystems (Huawei HiCar, Xiaomi CarWith, local alternatives). Even if you connect iPhone or Android, nothing will happen.

After our localization, CarPlay and Android Auto are **unlocked** and work fully. Included in the main service at no extra cost. Works on new models (Sealion, Leopard 7, Han L) and older Pre-facelift 2022-2023 models alike.

Which BYD models support wireless CarPlay

Full wireless CarPlay support

BYD Han (all generations), BYD Han Smart / Han L, BYD Tang / Tang L, BYD Song Plus (DM-i, EV, Champion), BYD Sealion 06/07/08, BYD Leopard 3/5/7, BYD Yuan Plus / Atto 3, BYD Seal — all these models work with wireless CarPlay and Android Auto after our activation.

Wired only

Early BYD Dolphin (2022-2023) and some Yuan Up variants require physical USB connection. We still enable CarPlay, but you need a Lightning or USB-C cable.

Phone requirements

iPhone

For wireless CarPlay: iPhone 8 or newer, iOS 13 or above. Works best with iPhone 12 and newer (improved Wi-Fi chip for stable wireless). Wired CarPlay works with any iPhone 5 or newer.

Android

For wireless Android Auto: phone with Android 11 or above, 5 GHz Wi-Fi (Android Auto Wireless doesn't work on 2.4 GHz). Samsung Galaxy, Xiaomi, Pixel flagships — no issues. Wired Android Auto — requires Android 6.0+.

First connection — step by step

For iPhone

Step 1: Enable Bluetooth and Wi-Fi on iPhone. Step 2: On the head unit open 'Settings → CarPlay' and pick 'Add Device'. Step 3: iPhone will prompt for approval — accept it. Step 4: Wi-Fi Direct connects automatically, CarPlay opens. Future trips connect automatically as soon as you sit in the car.

For Android

Step 1: Install Android Auto app (usually preinstalled). Step 2: On the head unit open 'Settings → Android Auto' and enable pairing mode. Step 3: On Android open Bluetooth settings, find the BYD head unit. Step 4: After Bluetooth pairing, Wi-Fi Direct connects automatically.

Common issues and solutions

CarPlay doesn't connect automatically

Usually iPhone forgot the saved connection (e.g. after iOS update). Solution: remove the car from 'Settings → General → CarPlay' and reconnect. Takes 2 minutes.

Android Auto connects but no sound

Classic first-connection problem. Solution: in head unit settings find 'Audio Source' and select Android Auto as Bluetooth media source. Also helps to reboot the head unit by holding Power 10 seconds.

CarPlay crashes or freezes

Usually a weak Wi-Fi signal between iPhone and head unit. Check that iPhone isn't in a bag far from the car. Also turn off Personal Hotspot on iPhone while using CarPlay — they conflict.

What you can do via CarPlay on BYD

Full CarPlay feature set is available on all BYD models after our activation: Google Maps, Waze, Yandex Navigator via CarPlay, YouTube Music, Spotify, Apple Music, any podcasts and audiobooks, WhatsApp, Telegram, iMessage — with voice reading and reply dictation, Siri for voice control, calendar and reminders.

Android Auto gives a similar set: Google Maps, Waze, any third-party navigators, YouTube Music, Spotify, any Android media apps, WhatsApp, Telegram — with voice reading and dictation, Google Assistant for voice control, Google calendar.

CarPlay vs built-in BYD system — which to use?

Our advice: use CarPlay for navigation (Google Maps or Waze — more accurate for most regions and update more often than BYD's built-in nav). For music — whichever is convenient: Spotify via CarPlay and the built-in media player work equally well. For calls — CarPlay is more convenient, integrated with iPhone contacts and call history.

The built-in localized BYD system is great because it works without a phone — climate, drive modes, ADAS settings, service functions. These can't be controlled via CarPlay, so both systems complement each other.

Does wireless CarPlay work on all BYDs?

On most modern models — yes. Han, Tang, Song Plus, Sealion, Leopard 3/5/7, Yuan Plus, Seal — all support wireless CarPlay after our activation. Only early Dolphin (2022-2023) and some Yuan Up need a cable.

Do I need a CarPlay adapter for BYD?

No. We unlock CarPlay in software during localization. No additional adapters (like Carlinkit) needed.

Does Android Auto work over 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi?

No. Android Auto Wireless requires 5 GHz Wi-Fi. If your phone has an old Wi-Fi chip, only wired connection will work.

Can I use CarPlay and BYD's built-in navigation at the same time?

Not on the same screen simultaneously. But you can switch between CarPlay and BYD's native interface in one tap to use features from both systems as needed.

What to do if CarPlay worked, then stopped?

1) Remove the car from iPhone settings and reconnect. 2) Reboot the head unit (Power 10 sec). 3) Check iOS is updated. If it doesn't help — message us, we'll help remotely.
