AITO HarmonyOS Localization — Complete Guide for M5, M7, M9 (2026)
Why AITO is the hardest Chinese EV to localize — and how we do it

AITO is a premium brand born from the Huawei-Seres partnership, gaining momentum rapidly in 2024-2026. AITO M5, M7 and M9 are among the most sought-after Chinese EVs on the secondary market. But AITO is exactly the brand that causes the most problems for localization services: the system runs on HarmonyOS, not Android like most Chinese cars.
This is a fundamentally different architecture. HarmonyOS is Huawei's operating system, developed as an Android alternative after US sanctions. It has its own apps, its own AppGallery store, its own voice assistant (Xiaoyi), its own logic for media. Standard 'Chinese car flashing' methods simply don't work here.
This guide covers what you need to know before localizing AITO M5, M7 or M9 — and why choosing the right workshop is critical.
AITO models we work with
AITO M5 / M5 EV
Compact family crossover. AITO's first production model, launched 2022. Range-extender hybrid and pure EV variants. Used as a primary family car thanks to accessible pricing and premium features.
AITO M7 / M7 Ultra
Mid-size crossover, 6-seater. Lineup flagship before M9 arrived. Pro, Max, Ultra trims. Impressive equipment: HUD projection, LiDARs, wireless charging, advanced Huawei ADAS.
AITO M9
Flagship premium crossover. Direct competitor to BMW X7 and Mercedes GLS in the Chinese segment. Full Huawei ADS 2.0 package, triple HUD projection, powered doors, business-class comfort.

Why HarmonyOS is difficult
The standard approach to Chinese car localization looks like this: connect to the head unit, flash international firmware with English, install Google apps, done. With AITO, that doesn't work.
First, HarmonyOS doesn't support Google services out of the box. Google Maps, YouTube, Play Store — you can't just sideload them as APKs. A compatibility layer (similar to MicroG for Android) is required.
Second, HarmonyOS has its own app format (HAP instead of APK). Many popular apps exist only in the Chinese AppGallery. We adapt each app individually.
Third, Huawei's Xiaoyi assistant originally understands only Chinese and basic English. For proper English/Arabic support we integrate a third-party AI (usually GPT-4 or a local alternative) — a separate complex process.
Fourth, AITO uses a Huawei CAN bus with its own protocol. Working with it requires specialized equipment ordinary auto shops simply don't have.
What we do during AITO localization
Full HarmonyOS interface translation
Main menu, all system settings, instrument cluster, HUD projection, climate control, navigation, media center, apps, notifications. Everything in consistent English, no 'buried' Chinese screens deep in settings. A massive job, because many AITO sub-menus are dynamic — generated on the fly, they can't just be 'text-file translated'.
App installation
Google Maps via compatibility layer, Waze, YouTube, WhatsApp, Telegram, Spotify. Each app is adapted for HarmonyOS and tested on the specific AITO model. Supported app list keeps growing based on customer requests.
English voice assistant
Xiaoyi (AITO's default assistant) stays for basic English commands, while we add a full English/Arabic AI that handles: complex commands, questions, navigation, music, climate, calls. Basic functions work offline.
HUD projection localized
One of AITO's signature features is the large windshield HUD. On factory firmware it's in Chinese. We fully translate the HUD and enable English for navigation directions. Works even without internet — uses local Google Maps offline data.
SIM slot and mobile internet
AITO has an eSIM tied to China Mobile or China Unicom. It won't work in the UAE, KSA, or other markets. We install an external SIM slot or convert the eSIM to work with local carriers (Etisalat, du, STC, Zain). 1-year warranty on the slot install.
What we don't touch — warranty preserved
Key question: is AITO / Huawei warranty preserved? Yes, fully. We only modify the HarmonyOS layer: interface, apps, voice assistant. We do not touch: battery and BMS, ADAS system (Huawei ADS), LiDARs, chassis electronics, brake system, electric door mechanics, suspension system.
AITO uses cloud diagnostics via Huawei Cloud. All critical systems (non-media) continue sending telemetry and logs to the cloud, which keeps warranty coverage intact. The only limitation — some Huawei online services (HarmonyOS phone integration, parking payment via AliPay) may not work outside China. That's not our doing — it's a Huawei limitation.
Timing and cost for AITO localization
AITO takes more time than BYD or Deepal — typically 4-6 hours per car due to HarmonyOS complexity. Flagship M9 can take up to 8 hours if the client wants the full package including all Huawei service integrations.
Cost: from 500 to 800 USD for the full package, depending on model. AITO M9 costs more due to larger workload with dual HUD projections and the Huawei ADS 2.0 system. Exact quote after diagnostics. Payment after verification — only when everything works.
What to know before buying an AITO from China
Before buying an AITO, verify two things. First: check the exact VIN and production year — some early M7 units (before June 2023) have board issues that are hard to diagnose remotely. Second: if you need full ADAS (Huawei ADS 2.0), verify the LiDARs above the windshield. Non-LiDAR models run a stripped-down version of autopilot.
We're always happy to consult before purchase. Send us the VIN, car photos, production year — we'll give a full compatibility and localization report within 30 minutes.
Preguntas frecuentes
Does Google Maps work on AITO M7/M9 after localization?
Yes. We install Google Maps via a HarmonyOS compatibility layer. Works offline (cached maps) and online through SIM. Waze can also be installed on request.
Is Huawei ADS 2.0 (autopilot) preserved after localization?
Yes, fully. We don't touch the Huawei ADAS system. The only change — we translate the autopilot notification interface to English/Arabic. Functionality and logic remain factory-original.
Does the HUD projection work in English/Arabic?
Yes. We translate all HUD elements: speed, navigation directions, warnings, ADAS prompts. Works even without internet — on local map data.
How long does AITO localization take?
4-6 hours for M5/M7, up to 8 hours for M9. AITO is more complex than BYD due to HarmonyOS specifics. We work in-workshop or remotely via VPN.
Can AITO firmware be reverted to Chinese?
Yes, always. We make a full ROM backup before localization. Rollback takes 45-60 minutes and is possible at any time.
How much does AITO localization cost?
500-800 USD depending on model. M5 starts at 500, M7 at 600, M9 at 700 USD. Price includes: HarmonyOS localization, apps, HUD translation, AI assistant, SIM slot. Exact quote after diagnostics.
Can I use a Huawei phone with AITO?
Yes, HarmonyOS phone-to-car integration works. We don't touch it. If you have iPhone or Android, we also connect it via CarPlay/Android Auto.
